March 1, 2004 Storm Chase |  Northern IL
In the immortal words of some veteran chasers, "We chase these days for those who choose not to".  Well not much was missed by those who didn't head out, though it was a great opportunity to peel back some of the rust that had built up over the dead of winter.  After some interesting model data (1, 2) acquired the previous day, I left that evening for Peoria with the hope of catching initiation early on the next day (roughly around noon!).  The real trigger this day would be an advancing upper cold pocket that would coincide with a narrow band of surface moisture rapidly undergoing modification by a dry slot.  In reality, the dewpoints diminished faster than anticipated and I was left with high based, low topped convection - d'oh!  Even so, I was still surprised at just how shallow the updrafts really were and even considered telling the locals that I was merely photographing the wildlife!  The highlights consisted of some 1/4" hail, a handful of CGs and a modest rainfoot.
