April 18, 2007 |  Northeast MT Marginal Hailer

Another short opportunity chase this day. Thankfully the storms that did develop today weren't too widespread else I would have been stuck at work and unable to chase! The setup involved a stationary boundary running from Billings north to near Malta with great moisture convergence all ahead of a sharp upper trough. My goal was to shoot west to this boundary and see what could organize in the nicely sheared environment.

Upon arriving in Hinsdale, I noticed a murky mass of clouds to my SW that slowly revealed itself better with time. Although this storm was going linear, it exhibited some inflow and a modest lowered base on its northern end for a while before lining out completely with penny size hail and gusts to maybe 50mph. I also observed an unusual dust plume to my north after this storm passed to my northeast. Oddly, the soil was moist enough from previous rains that blowing dirt should not have been a problem. An hour ealier storms farther south were rather prolific hailers per radar; although as is common for northeast MT ground truth was unavailable.
