| I chased from May 21-28 with a group of met and non-met folks who all shared varying levels of passion for weather and storm chasing. I'll include links to their webpages in the coming days to compare photos and logs. Today would be our first real chase day, though the night before we were able to get some decent video and photos of elevated severe storms around Wichita. After targetting a broad chunk of northeastern CO for today, we made an early departure from our motel in Wichita and eventually came across a broken line of Cu as we approached Goodland. The setup today was classic upslope with mid 50 dewpoints and modest northwesterly flow aloft. We intercepted the first cell north of Burlington, CO that displayed a decent RFB with dusty inflow followed by dirt plumes along the outflow. Some weak rotation was observed with one of these dust columns, but it was nothing more than 5 or 10 seconds worth. After this cell lost its structure, we noticed a peculiar updraft base all on its lonesome to our northwest. With time, it acquired a circular base, a wall cloud and even a few striations, but wasn't able to sustain this for very long. Several other chasers gathered around this cell as well and jokingly voiced their frustration as the cold pool took over and lined this cell out. We then called it a day and made tracks to Goodland for dinner and a motel. That evening we took advantage of some lightning photo ops as the MCS passed to our southeast. |
